One of things discussed was State run education. The right of parents to decide on what kind of education their children should have. In a democracy this right is surrendered or delegated to the will of the majority. Some people might not be happy to give up their right. (Issue of faith schools.) Mass democracy gives you the advantage of having a say in big collective decisions. At the risk of not getting your own way in those decisions. The alternative is not to have big collective decisions but to let people decide about themselves at an individual level. Disadvantage is fragmentation of society? Privatisation and democracy.
